Lyo – Back to Nature, in Eternal Memory

Since 2022, Lyo in the town of Bad Wonder has been a place of dissolution, the place where promission takes place. This innovative burial method offers a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional burials and reflects the growing desire to consider environmental protection even in dealing with death.

Promission – The Process

Promission accelerates the natural decomposition process and transforms organic substances into dry substances using cryogenics. The deceased are first cooled to -18 degrees Celsius and placed in a special promator. In this device, the body is cooled to -196 degrees Celsius in liquid nitrogen, making it extremely solid and brittle.

Through targeted vibration treatment, the body is then broken down into a fine, odorless granulate. Subsequent freeze-drying reduces the weight to about one-third of its original weight, and any remaining metal particles can be easily removed.

The resulting granules are stored in a compostable container. Within six to twelve months, they completely transform into valuable humus – a cycle that emphasizes our connection to nature.

At Lyo, no life ends, but rather begins a new cycle. The majority of the remains find their final resting place at Lyo; a small portion is used as valuable „compost“ to nourish the lush vegetation within and around the institution.
